 AbouT Farida Iqbal

A picture is supposed to say a thousand words. So if my work is any good, talking about it should be redundant. But here goes...

I started drawing at the age of 15, inspired by alternative comics, Salvador Dali and the bizarre dreams I had while in the closet. My comic strip "First Date" made it into the anthology "Girls Talk: Young Women Speak their Hearts and Minds", edited by Maria Pallotta-Chiarolli. At 16 my linocut "Gandhi's Feet" made it into an exhibition at the Art Gallery of WA for year 11 and 12 students. If you want to read about my claustrophobic but creative youth I have a zine about it that you can buy.

After high school I studied anthropology, and eventually got a PhD. My thesis was on violence against queer youth. I also wrote and illustrated a zine called "It's the Queer Revolutionary Disco". It was highly regarded on the Sydney queer scene for its up-front politics, punk humour, queer pride and artistry.

After years of political activism and anthropological research, I want to clear the noise in my brain. So I'm making these bizarre pictures of aliens. They cheer me up. I hope they do the same for you.

Incidentally I am the daughter of Rebecca Cool, the well known artist and picture book illustrator. I am also the girlfriend of notorious comedian and visual artist HelChild.

Keep your eyes peeled for my joint exhibition with HelChild later this year. And if you would like to buy any of my work, get in touch! I do commissions.
